I’m Clara Vannucci, an Italian documentary photographer. (b. 1985 – based in Italy)
As a freelance photographer I work as correspondent for The New York Times and I collaborate with Italian and International magazines and newspapers like ESPN, Bloomberg, Vanity Fair, Vogue, TIME, Nat Geo on assignments in portraiture, culture, sport, travel, editorial and fashion.

My passion lies in long-term projects that delve into the complexities of the human experience, often within the framework of the Criminal Justice System.
– Crime and Redemption (2007-2020): This exploration documents the transformative power of theatre within the walls of Volterra’s prison.
– Rikers Island: focuses on NYC’s Jail Battered women section.
– Bail Bond: a two-year investigation culminated in a published book by Fabrica. By examining the interconnected roles of bondsmen, defendants, and bounty hunters, it offers a nuanced perspective on the US Bail Bond System.
Arlene: an intimate look at a former prisoner’s struggle to rebuild her life after release.

Featured recently in The New York Times, my last ongoing long-term documentary project, Born Twice, captures the inspiring journey of Edoardo, a trans man determined to become a gondolier, carrying on his father’s legacy. His journey in Venice, a city steeped in tradition, becomes a testament to love, resilience, and the pursuit of self-acceptance.

Photography is my voice, a universal language connecting me to the world. Reportage’s immediacy and authenticity resonate deeply, allowing me to document lives through my lens.
I used to teach photography to the inmates at the Maximum Security Opera Prison and now I’m a Photography professor at IED (European Design Institute).
